What is the vision for the East Riding Music Service

The East Riding Music Service enriches the lives of children and the community by delivering education through music.  Building on our reputation for excellence, we will harness local and national partnerships to provide every child with sustainable and inclusive pathways to access great music.

What are the guiding principles of the Music Service?

  • At the heart of partnership is inclusion and equality
  • All partners agree to one main focus: that of putting the needs, welfare and happiness of the child at the centre
  • All partners recognise the need for sustainable provision
  • All partners understand the need for clarity and transparency
  • All partners share a commitment to child safety and achieving better musical outcomes for all young people
  • All partners are aware of the need to assure the quality of the work they do and to collect and report appropriate data

Statement of inclusive practice

The East Riding Music Service provides musical opportunities for all children, regardless of their needs or background. We inspire learners, respect their diversity and provide a child-centred, inclusive environment where everyone can flourish.

As part of our drive to become a more inclusive music service we commissioned Dr Phil Mullen to write an inclusion strategy. This is a four-year plan that will help us broaden the range of children we engage with, particularly children in challenging circumstances (CCC), and enable us to identify and put in place those things that will help us do what we do better.

· Creating partnerships with external practitioners and national organisations to support our inclusion strategy

· Devising and co-ordinating projects in key areas

· Listening to and co-creating projects with children and young people across the county

· Supporting training for SMS and school staff on inclusive teaching and practice

· Developing inclusive performance opportunities

· Celebrating and sharing success (new Music awards scheme implemented Sept 2022)

· Supporting staff to keep accurate and up to date SEND information

We have adopted Youth Music’s HEARD acronym as our working definition of inclusion:

Holistic – the personal, social and emotional benefits of music drive our vision and mission

Equitable – people facing the biggest barriers receive the most support

Authentic – the work is designed in collaboration with the people it’s for

Representative – the people we work with reflect our diverse society

Diverse – all musical genres, styles and practices are valued equally

Our goal is to provide musical opportunities for all children, regardless of their needs or background. We inspire learners, respect their diversity and provide a child-centred, inclusive environment where everyone can flourish.
