The HEROS Orchestra was set up to give young people the opportunity to participate in orchestral music projects and activities during the holidays. The Orchestra serves the region covered by the Humber Music Hub: East Riding of Yorkshire, Hull, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire. The Orchestra is also run in partnership with our Regional Centre for Advanced Training (CAT): Yorkshire Young Musicians.

As part of our exciting partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the spring HEROS orchestra will be coached by players from the RPO!

Who can join? Orchestral players in full time education from our region: Hull, East Riding, North Lincs, North-East Lincs Grade V or above. This includes players up to the age of 21 at college or university. Also open to all musicians studying with Yorkshire Young Musicians. IT’S FREE, so sign up and get involved!

Becky McKee has been awarded the Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year Award 2025, in partnership with ABRSM.

Becky has won the Visiting Music Teacher category. The prestigious awards were set up by Classic FM to recognise and reward exceptional music teachers who have made a real difference to the musical lives of young people. She was selected by a panel of industry judges, including representatives from Classic FM, ABRSM, the Department of Education, music teachers and experts from across the sector.

The judges said: “Rebecca champions inclusion in all her music activities and has created countless opportunities for all children to access music, particularly those who otherwise may not have. She has run projects for Ukrainian children and their parents, and sourced funding for and ran holiday projects with the Holiday Activities and Food scheme. As a violin teacher, she visits many schools in the region and has high pupil numbers wherever she goes. She supports other teachers, helping them to make their music lessons as inclusive as possible, sharing videos of lessons with pupils with additional needs. Rebecca is a remarkable force for good!”

 Becky commented: “I am truly honoured and completely blown away to have received this award, this really means so much to me, thank you. I absolutely love my job, and I feel very lucky to be able to provide children with opportunities to engage in music. Music is fun, and I love to see the children enjoying and expressing themselves through making brilliant music.

I would not be able to do this job without the fantastic support from the team of peripatetic music teachers and admin staff at the East Riding schools’ music service and the support of the teachers and headteachers in the schools that I work in, a huge thank you to all of them – we make a brilliant team!”

It’s great to see music education being key to the life of so many schools right across the East Riding and how music has the ability to engage and improve the education and lives of children and young people.
