Share Your Child’s Musical Journey – We’d Love to Hear From You!
Dear Year 6 Parents and Carers,
As your child approaches the end of their primary school journey, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on the musical experiences they’ve had along the way. Whether they’ve just begun learning an instrument or have been playing for several years, every musical journey is unique and valuable.
The East Riding Music Service is committed to nurturing young musicians, and your feedback is incredibly important to us. We kindly invite you to complete a short survey about your child’s instrumental lessons and musical development so far. Your insights will help us celebrate their progress, understand their experiences, and continue to improve the support we offer to young learners.
Thank you for being a part of your child’s musical story — we look forward to hearing from you!

Signing Choir
This weekend marked a special occasion as we gathered for the first rehearsal of our inclusive 'Signing choir' The energy, talent, and unity in the room were absolutely electrifying, and we couldn't be prouder of what we've accomplished together.
Our signing choir is a testament to the power of inclusivity, where every member brings their unique abilities and passion for music to create something truly magical. It was heartwarming to witness the joy, camaraderie, and shared love for music that filled the space.

What a fantastic year 2023 has been with concerts throughout the year not only in and around the East Riding but in Manchester, Northampton and Vienna! We have taught over 6000 children and young people across the East Riding every week and set up exciting new projects such as 'Open Orchestras' in St Anne's School in Hessle and sessions for Ukrainian refugees. Next year is going to be just as busy and fulfilling with a new 'Signing Choir' joining our ensembles. But, before that can I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and we'll see you all from the 8th of January!
Merry Christmas,

Come and play weekend
Our Learn to Play event was a great success! We have received very positive feedback from parents. This is Freya who was one of the children who attended our foundation and infant event. Freya's mum said:
"We visited the East Riding Schools Music Hub's 'Learn to Play' event after receiving an email about the session through my daughter's school. The session was attended and included children from various schools in the East Riding. We had a lovely morning exploring musical instruments and singing with the team at the hub, my little girl thoroughly enjoyed the session and we would love to attend similar music related activities in the future...."
Inclusion Update
The East Riding Music Hub is continuing to develop its inclusive practice across the county. We’re working hard to make our existing activities more welcoming to a diverse range of people and working on some exciting new projects with disabled students in a few locations. Some of the projects we’re working on are:
- The East Riding’s first ever Open Orchestra at St Anne’s school. We’re working with disabled students to create a brand new musical ensemble that will feature traditional and electronic instruments making exciting new music. Watch this space!
- Partnering with Yorkshire Sound Women Network to put on their successful WIRED programme for girls and minority genders in the new year. More details to follow…
- Working with other local partners to support exciting musical opportunities across the county, including My Pockets film company and the ‘Lookout’ in Withernsea
- In the early stages of using Education Health Care Plans to support children in accessing music
- Improving our knowledge of ADHD and Autism so that we can better support our students in schools
We’d love to hear from you if there are areas where you think we could be doing something different.
Senior Ensemble Tour 2023
The end of last term saw the Senior ensembles fly off on tour to the wonderful city of Vienna. After a long journey – coach through the night to Heathrow, then a flight to Munich and finally a coach journey to Vienna – we finally arrived!
Our hotel was near to the Prater, a fantastic theme park which features the iconic Ferris Wheel that was made famous by the film The Third Man.
In addition to spending time over the next few days, exploring the city centre and enjoying some of the delights that this amazing cultural capital has to offer, we also performed three concerts in a variety of venues. The first concert on Friday evening was in the Prater theme park. We were a little late starting due to a passing rain shower! All the groups gave a good performance which was well received by the large appreciative audience.
We had a day sightseeing on the Saturday visiting Schönbrunn Castle and Schönbrunn Zoo. Sunday saw a more leisurely start before we headed off to Bad Tatsmannsdorf via a visit Eisenstadt to explore the Esterhazy castle which featured an interactive exhibition on the life of the Haydn.
After a really nice meal at a restaurant just outside Bad Tatsmannsdorf we headed in to the town centre to perform on a magnificent bandstand. We received another fantastic reception from another great audience.
Monday saw our last concert performance in the morning in the centre of Vienna in a magnificent concert hall – The Ehrbar Saal. This venue is regularly used by professional orchestras and chamber ensembles. It was a fantastic experience for our young players to experience performing in such a high quality venue. The hall was full and we gave a really memorable performance to a wonderful audience. Afterwards we loaded the van and said goodbye to Mrs Calvert and Mr Hardy as they began their two day journey back home with all the instruments!
The rest of the group had time for some more sight-seeing and a trip to the Prater to enjoy the rides and all the excitement of the fair!
On Tuesday we said goodbye to Vienna and began our long journey home to England reflecting on a fantastic tour where we managed to explore and experience a city steeped in history and with a musical heritage that is unmatched.
Thanks to all the staff who gave up their time so willingly to ensure that everyone had a great time. Thanks also to Equity travel and Concerts Austria for putting together a brilliant tour for us. Most of all thanks to all of the members of the senior ensembles – you were great ambassadors for the East Riding and were a pleasure to spend time with!
Well Done

Ukrainian Music Project
What an amazing term we have had! In January we met with Ukrainian refugee children that are isolated across the East Riding and brought them together for weekly music sessions. The children had never met each other before the sessions started and have become the best of friends! We sang songs, played on the glockenspiels and xylophones, experimented with the African drums and Bamboo Tamboo and absolutely loved learning new skills on the ukulele. On Tuesday 21st March it was our final session together and we performed to parents and friends in a concert.
The children had such enthusiasm, and it was wonderful to see how music brought them so much joy. Their confidence and English-speaking skills improved every week. I am so proud of every single one of you. You have achieved so much in such a short space of time. Well Done

ERSMS Tour 2022
At the end of the summer term, after fantastic performances by our ensembles at Bridlington Spa for the Midsummer Festival and other exciting summer events, the senior ensembles undertook their first tour for 3 years.
The Youth Orchestra, Senior Wind Band, Jazz Collective and Flute choir set off at midnight on 20th July for the long drive through the night down to Poole to catch the morning ferry to Jersey on the start of what turned out to be a memorable tour. The hostel was really friendly and made the group feel very welcome. The food was great with all of the groups dietary needs catered for brilliantly.
The members undertook 3 excellent concerts, one in the St Helier Methodist Centre, another outdoors in Liberation Square and a grand finale in the wonderful setting of Howard Davis Park on the purpose built bandstand.
It wasn’t all hard work however. There were plenty of opportunities to explore the unique and beautiful island. The group visited Gorey castle, explored Jersey Zoo and visited the historic war tunnels, which told the story of the German occupation of the channel islands during the second world war. There was even the opportunity to try foraging – exploring (and tasting) the hidden foods that can be found all around us. Who would have thought nettles could be so tasty!
All too soon the tour was over and it was time to return home and reflect on what was a fantastic experience. New friendships were made and the bonds that were formed will definitely have a positive effect on our ensembles moving forwards. It was great to be able to go away together again and to perform to new audiences and experience the delights that Jersey has to offer.
Thanks must go to the staff who gave up their time to support the ensembles and made sure that everything went smoothly. They really enjoyed the experience and were so impressed by the way all of the ensemble members conducted themselves – they were a delight!
Here’s looking forward to a fantastic year of exciting musical experiences ahead as we start our rehearsals and a new year of music making!

Ensembles are back!
We're back!!!
Our ensembles have returned to "live" rehearsals. We started a week ago with the Percussion Ensemble. Saturday saw the Youth Orchestra return to the Hexagon for their first rehearsal of the year.
It was fantastic to see and hear both groups back together again - and to meet new members.
We are looking forward to welcoming all of our ensembles back over the next few weeks.
