East Riding Schools’ Music Service
The Schools’ Music Service offers a varied programme of support for schools and is committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to make music. As the lead organisation for the East Riding Music Hub we provide support to schools and other settings to enable them to meet their requirements of the National Plan for Music Education, giving every child the chance to sing and learn to play an instrument. We do this by offering high quality specialist instrumental teachers, providing a range of tuition types from individual to large groups, enabling pupils from all financial background to have access to music lessons. There is a wide range of research showing the positive effects on concentration and behaviour within the classroom.
‘Music education has been found to greatly enhance students’ understanding and achievement in non-musical subjects. What do we offer?
Instrumental and Vocal Tuition KS1-5:
We offer vocal and instrumental tuition across the county, covering orchestral and band instruments as well as the voice. Our teachers are trained to teach inclusively, cater for all learners and have experience working with vulnerable learners.
Small Group / Individual Lessons:
Our staff offer either individual or small group lessons in all instruments/voice. Where numbers allow, lessons run on a rotating timetable ensuring students don’t repeatedly miss the same lessons. Students can hire instruments from the Music Service for £35 per term, or take advantage of our Instrumental Purchase Scheme (educational VAT free prices).

Training
All staff are highly trained music specialists receiving regular CPD both on key musical teaching focus and classroom management. They are supported by a strong mentoring, observation and guidance by their line managers and senior staff.

All tutors are subject to rigorous pre-employment checks, hold enhanced DBS checks and update their safeguarding training at least bi-annually.

What services do you provide?
The East Riding Schools’ Music Service provides a wide range of services to support the musical development of the young people in your school. We offer Instrumental lessons (small group and whole class) on a wide range of instruments (including voice). The Schools’ Music Service also offers schools Whole Class Instrumental lessons (First Access / WCET) and Curriculum Music Lessons and CPD.
We also have a large number of centrally run ensembles, from first access through to advanced bands and orchestras, which offer clear progression routes for pupils as they develop as musicians. As the lead organisation of the East Riding Music Education Hub the Schools’ Music Service is responsible for delivering the core and extension roles of the National Plan for Music Education. Through links with a large number of partner organisations we are able to ensure that our musical offer in schools is as diverse as possible. How many teaching sessions are delivered throughout the year ?
The service contract for the provision of instrumental (whole class and small group) and classroom curriculum music (CCM) is for a minimum of 30 weeks per year. The majority of schools will receive more than 30 sessions. If schools receive less than 30 lessons due to non-attendance a refund will be given for those missed. How much should we charge for lessons?
Schools should have their own policy on both charging and the remission of any fees that they may need to recover in order to meet the subsidised cost of the lessons.
Are there any other costs associated with the tuition?
Pupils may be asked to purchase music as required. A number of pool instruments are available to hire from the music service at a cost of £35 per term. At an appropriate time parents may wish to purchase an instrument for their child. We offer an instrument purchase scheme where parents can purchase instruments at an educational discount (exempt from vat). How do we know what progress pupils are making?
Annual reports are provided for parents, which are based upon the teacher's continuous assessment of the pupil's progress. Entrance to public examinations may also be encouraged in order to provide both an incentive and a record of achievement for the pupil. Who delivers Whole Class Ensemble tuition (WCET)?
All of the WCET programmes in the East Riding are delivered by teachers from the Schools' Music Service working with teachers and classes in primary schools. Whole class ensemble tuition is a national programme that evolved from the government's pledge that "over time, all pupils in primary schools who wish to should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument."
